ASN’S Statement on Leaving ‘X’

Abortion Support Network have decided to join many other feminist, radical organisations in our decision to deactivate our ‘X’ account. 

We no longer feel that the platform aligns with the values of our community, nor does it remain a safe space for abortion activists, women, trans folks and all marginalised people. 

The platform is run by an extremely right-wing billionaire, who is actively campaigning for a roll-back of abortion access and to restrict our bodily autonomy.  

ASN will always be an intersectional feminist organisation and we are committed to anti racism, trans inclusion and standing up for the rights of marginalised people.  

Limiting abortion access is state-perpetrated violence. For-profit social media, run by the world’s wealthiest people, have no place colluding with the state, interfering in politics, and playing a role in violence against the bodies of vulnerable people.  

We will look into alternative platforms in future – but for now you can still find us on Instagram and Facebook.  

Increasingly, though, content containing information on safe access to abortion – or even the word ‘abortion’ at all – is struggling to be heard against biased algorithms and censorship. Accounts in the US are being closed down, restricted and hidden from view – while globally the impact of ‘shadow bans’ and restricting abortion related content, and any content discussing trans rights, reproductive justice, anti-racism, decolonisation and progressive discourse has risen sharply. 

Meanwhile, protections against hate speech, harassment, transphobia, homophobia, racism and misogyny have been removed – turning what was once a safe environment for community building into a dangerous place for many.

Abortion funds have existed for far longer than social media has, and activism persists around the world despite these attempts to silence us. Rest assured, we will still be here, funding abortions, for as long as we need to exist – no matter what.
