Emergency Appeal: Save our Helpline

We need your help to save our helpline. We need to raise £50,000 by the end of April to cover the increasing costs of helping people travel for an abortion.  

Over 2024 and into this year, calls – and costs – have been increasing. Grants are up 72% since last year. January 2025 was our busiest month ever – we helped 119 people, and we funded £26,100 in grants.  

We’ve gone from helping 3 people in 2009 to more than 1,000 people in 2024. Since we began, we have supported more than 10,000 people and provided life-saving financial support to almost 3,000 who had to travel for an abortion. We don’t ask why someone wants an abortion, we just ask how we can help. Now we need your help to save our helpline. 

If we don’t meet our target, we’re going to have to change the way we do things. At ASN we’re proud to always say ‘yes’ to anyone who contacts us – and we don’t want to have to start turning people away who need our help.

About ASN’s Helpline 

ASN is contacted by 3 people every day who need help accessing a safe and legal abortion. Our volunteer-run helpline supports people with what they need: information about safe and legal access, organising flights, helping with visas, and paying for abortions for people who can’t afford the costs alone. 

For more than 15 years, ASN has been helping people who cannot access an abortion where they live to travel for care in another European country. In this time, we have supported over 10,000 people and provided life-saving financial support to almost 3,000 people. But calls are increasing, and so are costs. In just seven years, the average amount of money needed by each caller person we fund has tripled from £300 to £900.  

 We’re funded by a powerful community of people like you – people who think ‘I can’t afford an abortion’ should never be the reason somebody continues a pregnancy.  

How your donation will help

Every donation made to this campaign will help someone access an abortion.  

Donations of any amount will go towards keeping our helpline running: funding the client costs, overheads, and supervision costs of running the helpline. 

• £10 can fund an emergency passport at Krakow airport 

• £40 can fund a train from the airport to the clinic in London 

• £80 can fund an initial consultation with a clinic 

• £100 can fund return flights from Dublin to Liverpool 

• £120 can fund a night of accommodation for a young client and her companion 

• £140 can fund a month of phoneline costs for the helpline team 

• £150 can fund a month of interpreter costs, allowing us to speak to around 50 clients on the phone 

• £200 can fund accommodation and travel from Warsaw to Amsterdam 

• £300 funds more expensive flights – booked urgently, or because they didn’t have a passport 

• £400 can go towards the costs of an abortion procedure in a clinic  

• £1000 can fund a procedure in hospital 

• £1500 can fund a surgical abortion over 19 weeks gestation
